another  possibility is to Place the image into a new do***ent, go to the 
Layers palette and click the side arrow and choose Template.

Create a new Layer and grab the Pen tool (probably THE most im****tant tool

in  Illustrator!) and start drawing your silhouette.
It's kind of a manual way of doing it but you  get good results too.
