Ivan hit us, too. But what got us more than the winds (cause of the
"condo" sea walls) was approximately 8 tornadoes that tore up and down
our major roads, hitting mobile homes (what else?), businesses, and
smaller homes.
The worst disaster I think I've personally seen in a long time was the
freak tornado that demolished most of the town where I lived. Well,
that's not fair to say - we were actually on the road down from MD when
it happened (moving here).
It was a freak Supercell F-5 that almost completely destroyed La Plata,
MD. No warning - that kind of thing's not typical for that area.
Tornadoes are typically the tiny ones that land out in the trees
somewhere, take a tree, and vanish.
After the big tornado, the home that we had lived in (and already sold)
was about two feet tall - completely destroyed. One of my best friends
had just left a local KFC, began strapping her kids into their car
seats, looked up, and the KFC was GONE. No one was killed though. All
in all, that devastating tornado only killed 3 people - it should have
been so much worse, though. So glad it wasn't.
