I have used Ultra Fractal for five years. It is an excellent program,
but not free. Personally, I feel that the cost is well worth it. It
doesn't exactly expire, but all images rendered with an unregistered
version are embedded with that information. Two big things make UF
different than any other fractal art programs I have investigated....an
excellent user interface expressly adapted to the peculiarities of
fractal art, and the ability to composite multiple layers to create
more than illustrations of the mathematical entities. Some examples of
my art are at: http://www.mathsong.com
and

A nice list of available fractal art programs, free and otherwise can
be found here:

The GIMP has some nifty fractal filters/scripts. It is a great,
photoshop type image program.
Cheers,
Susan
