Hi Karen

I tend to close all running programs on my task bar eg Antivirus software
ad 
removers etc. before I load any new programs. It is to be noted that that 
whilst installing programs AV programs have a tendancy to block components

being installed.

I have Painter 3 and installed it on WIN XP and a few installs were needed

before it worked correctly.
I also made sure that any of my personal saved libray files were not added

as when I did add them then I would have the same problem as you have 
stated.
