I know of no primer.  If you lighten an image the colour saturation is
always reduced, whether using bci or transparency.  If you want to
have more colour, increase saturation after lightening.

When I've made backgrounds like you propose, I've pasted the image on
a white background, changed transparency until the image is
sufficiently washed out.  If you want more colour, combine pasted
image with background after changing transparency, and increase colour
saturation (you can also do without combining).
