Hi,
I'm researching the actress Minna Gale-Haynes/Haines and came across
an April 6, 1893 article online from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle about an
exhibition of the Society of American Artists. Frank V. Dumond did a
****trait of her as ****tia in brilliant red robes. I've been unable to
find any mention of this ****trait listed among his works on various
art websites. Does anyone out there have any other information about
this painting?
Thanks,
Karla Bushway
Excerpt of article:
"In the department of ****traiture there is more variety and more art
than are usually found in this branch of work, for the average
****trait is but a dull and perfunctory performance, of consequence
only to the sitter and his friends. Striking among the striking
canvases of this kind is Frank V. Dumond's ****trait of Minna Gale
Haines as ****tia, arrayed in the red robes of the lawyer. It is a
symphony in red, as it has grown common to call it, and the reds are
treated with art, for it is not easy to use this color without a
glare. The tints that Mr. Dumond has employed are such as one will
find in oriental rugs, where the raw dyes are ripened by use and years
of sunlight. They approach the true prismatic red, yet they do not
offend. The skillful gradation of one tone into another is largely
responsible for this success, for this insures a constant, though
subtle variety, such as every picture must have, if it is to hold the
eye and engage the imagination."
